Vernon Alwood Steele, born June 12, 1949, in Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home in Homestead, Florida, on September 8, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife and son.
A proud graduate of Harry P. Harding High School (Class of 1967), Vernon enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1969. He served with honor during the Vietnam War at Cam Ranh Bay and was later stationed in North Dakota, England, California, and finally Homestead. He also proudly served in Operation Desert Storm, continuing his commitment to his country with courage and dedication. He retired in 1992 as a Master Sergeant of the 31st Medical Group, where he led both the orthopedic and surgical clinics.
In December 1971, he met the love of his life, Bridget Steele. They married in March 1974, breaking racial barriers and building a lasting partnership rooted in strength and love. After military retirement, Vernon launched a successful business selling orthopedic trauma instruments, retiring in 2013.
He was a devoted husband, father to Tynetta, Richard, and Tremain; grandfather to Tavoni, Tremia, Tayla, Titus, and Cheyenne; and great-grandfather to two. He cherished time with his family, especially batting cage outings with his grandson Titus, and found deep fellowship in the Wiley Wright Military Lodge #705.
Vernon also shared a close bond with his sister Kimberly Burch and brother-in-law Johnny Burch, whom he loved dearly. Their connection brought joy, support, and warmth to his life.
Vernon will be remembered for his quiet strength, deep integrity, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy of service, courage, and compassion lives on in all who knew him
